Yesterday I finally got my act together and registered for Boise 70.3. And while I apparently surprised some people, it's been in the year long plan all along. See, rather than focus on training for one race for an entire year, I broke my year up into quarters. First quarter - last fall - I concentrated on improving my run by working on intensity. I raced 2 5k and 2 10ks. This current quarter was all about adding some run endurance, cumulating in the Canyonland's Half Marathon in 10 days. April and May will about coming back to triathlon, concentrating mostly on getting my bike back up to speed (har-har). I will probably also race the Summer Open Sprint in May and the And why Boise, you may wonder? Well, I didn't feel comfortable racing Boulder 70.3 only 6 weeks out from Wisconsin. I was pretty sore after last year's race and it took about 2-3 weeks to feel like I was recovered. And I wouldn't want to not race my best because I was concerned about the looming Ironman. So I looked at nearby half-Ironman races earlier in the year and my choices were pretty much Kansas or Boise (or Lubbock in July, but that was never really a choice. I wilt in heat). And it so happens that Boise is the D3 Multisport race of the year so I'll be able to go out with training friends. And that, my friends, is The Plan in a nutshell.
In other training news, our main set at master's was the dreaded 10x100's. Last time I did this set, my interval was 1:45 and I was demoted at the end of a pretty poor performance. Today, the coach set my interval at 1:50 and I consistently came in at 1:35 and got 15 seconds of rest. So either I swim a heck of a lot better when I get more than 3 seconds rest, or I have improved a bit in the last month. I'm holding out that I'm improving.
