...but I got through it anyway. One of my various and sundry weekend activities left me really sore. I could explain the sore legs from a full day of snowboarding but my back and arms really hurt too. For the most part, my running program has been building mileage with some non-intense speed work. Today's run called for a 40 minute run at lactic threshold (aka as fast as you can run for 40 minutes). My 10 minute warm up was ok and my first mile went pretty well too. And then I hit a wall. I bargained with myself that I didn't have to do the full 40 minutes, but I did have to do a race effort 5k. I managed to do 28:24 and my average heart rate was 2 beats per minute lower than race pace. And it was unpleasant. All the pain of racing with none of the adrenaline or schwag.
My next workout was masters. With my sore arms and 5 mile run I wasn't expecting much, so I was pleasantly surprised. I was slow, but I was able to swim the entire hour comfortably. We did a fun workout, or at least a novel one, which helped. We started on at 2:30 interval and we were to swim as far as we thought we could and get the rest we needed. I swam 150 yards in 2:27, so I got 3 seconds rest and started again. The interval dropped by 5 seconds every round so the next time I did 125 yards in 2:05 and had 20 seconds to rest. We did the pattern for the rest of class, ending on a minute interval.
