This is our 3rd summer having hummingbird feeders. The first year we got several female Rufous hummingbirds that stayed through July and August. Last year we didn't get much action at all, though those Rufous' came through. This year was very slow until about 2 weeks ago, when some Broad-Tailed males found the feeder. We now have them, plus some Broad-Tailed females and the Rufous females. All the birds are very territorial and aggressive and they are constantly fighting over the feeder. When males fly, their wings make a buzzing noise that almost sounds like a giant insect and when they fight they chirp at each other and it sounds like little machine guns. Personally, I think I have enough sugar water for everyone, but we are enjoying the action in our backyard.
